What Is a Discovery Flight? Your First Lesson, Explained

Updated July 2026 · Aether Airworks · Keystone Heights Airport (42J), serving Gainesville, Jacksonville & Ocala

A discovery flight — sometimes called an intro flight or first lesson — is exactly what it sounds like: you go flying, and you do a real portion of the flying yourself. It is not a sightseeing ride. A certificated flight instructor sits beside you, the flight is logged in an actual logbook, and the time counts toward the FAA’s requirements for your pilot certificate. It is how nearly every pilot in America — airline captains included — flew for the first time.

What actually happens

  • Preflight briefing (15–20 min). Your instructor walks you around the aircraft, explains what everything does, and covers what you’ll do in the air.
  • The flight (30–40 min). You sit in the left seat — the pilot’s seat. The instructor handles takeoff and landing and gives you the controls in the air: climbs, turns, straight-and-level. Over North Central Florida’s lakes and pine country, it’s a spectacular office.
  • Debrief and logbook (10–15 min). You talk through the flight, ask anything, and your instructor signs your very first logbook entry.

What a discovery flight costs in Florida

Around North Central Florida — Gainesville, Jacksonville, Ocala — discovery flights typically run $99–$250 depending on the school and aircraft. At Aether Airworks, a discovery flight is $125, bookable online, flown in a modern Vashon Ranger R7 from Keystone Heights Airport (42J) — about 45 minutes from the University of Florida campus and under an hour from Jacksonville’s west side.

Does the time really count?

Yes. Flight time logged with a certificated flight instructor counts toward the FAA minimum experience requirements for a private pilot certificate. Your discovery flight is literally lesson one — if you continue, you’re not starting over, you’re on hour 0.6 or 0.7 already.

Who can take one

  • Anyone, at any age — under 18 just brings a parent or guardian.
  • No experience, no medical certificate, no paperwork beyond a government ID.
  • Bring sunglasses. We handle everything else.

Is it a good gift?

It’s one of the best experience gifts there is — birthdays, graduations, retirements. Call or text (860) 287-0971 and we’ll arrange it for your recipient.
